Hint #5. Paint a picture of your main characters using descriptive adjectives to show what they look like and how they act.
Here are examples of some of my main characters:
“Nanette put on her yellow shirt and jeans, tied her dark brown hair back in a ponytail, and grinned at her freckled face and soft brown eyes in the mirror.” from untitled book in the works.
“An old scraggly bearded mountain man sitting by himself at the corner table swiped his plate of food off the table sending it crashing to the floor.” from Music Camp Mystery II.
“A jeep drove up. Two older high school girls and a boy about thirteen years old jumped out … The tall thin girl wore her black hair pulled back tightly in a ponytail, and had pushed her sunglasses up on top of her head. The other girl was quite a bit shorter and had long blond hair that she let fly in the wind.” from Music Camp Mystery II.
“Nana was perched on the yellow kitchen stool and wore one of Mother’s white butcher aprons over her rose-colored wool suit and pink silk blouse. Sarah ran to her and gave her a hug. She liked the smell of Nana’s rose-scented sachet and face powder as she snuggled against her grandmother.” from “The Red Christmas Diary.”
